Preparation is everything
Tip 1: Gather all documents before you submit the application. Tip 2: Have all foreign documents translated in advance by a sworn translator. Tip 3: Check validity dates — some documents, such as the police clearance certificate (Führungszeugnis), must not be older than 3–6 months. Tip 4: Use the Civitas document check for your country of origin.
Getting the submission right
Tip 5: Always submit certified copies, not originals (unless explicitly requested). Tip 6: Send by registered mail and keep the proof of receipt — it counts as the start of the clock for the processing period. Tip 7: Use the online portal if your city has one — it is faster than paper. Tip 8: Answer follow-up questions from the authority within 2 weeks.
After submitting your application
Tip 9: Note the submission date and set a calendar reminder for 3 months later — at that point you can file an action for failure to act (Untätigkeitsklage) if there has been no response. Tip 10: Inform the authority about changes of address — many decisions are delivered by post, and a wrong address can cost you deadlines.
Frequently asked questions
Where do I get the right application form?
Directly from the naturalization authority (Einbürgerungsbehörde) of your city or via its website. Civitas prepares all application forms digitally and checks them for completeness.
Do I have to appear in person?
For submitting the application, often yes — some cities require an in-person interview. The actual naturalization (handover of the certificate) always takes place in person.
Can I withdraw my application?
Yes — at any time before naturalization. This sometimes makes sense if your situation has changed (e.g. a new job with a better income) and you want to submit a new, more complete application.
